Interview with 2012Live ahead of Vortex Open Source 2016.

2012 is the live DJ project of Eduardo Torres. Born in São Paulo, Eduardo is a seasoned DJ, producer as well as event organiser for one of Brazil’s most prominent arts and culture festivals known as RESPECT. He is currently signed with Antu Records and has performed at some of the biggest psytrance events around the world including Universo Paralello in Brazil, Ritual in Mexico and of course, Vortex Open Source right here in South Africa. With ten years’ experience behind the decks, Eduardo’s music fuses elements of hi-tech with catchy synths to entrance listeners and keep bodies moving for hours on end. This year, we are psyked to welcome 2012 back to the Circle of Dreams for Open Source 2016.

2012-live

PSYKED:
Hi Eduardo! Tell us about the first time you discovered psytrance. What originally compelled you to start DJing and producing your own music?

2012:
Ola! Thanks for the invitation. I’m known as Edu; I discovered the trance parties in 1996 when I was my first Earthdance. I used to go to São Paulo and go to underground clubs that played techno and drum’n’bass. The psytrance was love at first sight; after the first party I never stopped attending. Whether I’m producing, partying or playing, I’ve lived and breathed this movement since I first discovered it.

In 2003, the scene in São Paulo no longer pleased me; it was the same parties with no new sound. Under the influence of friends who showed me the songs that I liked, I decided to start playing DJ sets to bring something different to what was going on. At this same time, I started learning how to use music production programs. I kept learning and improving until 2010 when I started the 2012Live project with my friend and former member, David.

Interview with Psyops ahead of Vortex Open Source 2016

Psyops is Sean Marais from Cape Town, South Africa. First introduced to psytrance by his best  friend in the year 2000, he became entranced with all aspects of the psychedelic trance scene – including the music and décor – which soon led to the inception of Psyops . His diverse musical style ranges from ambient to minimal, day and night-time psychedelic, and more. Psyops says that his music is about telling stories and taking the listener on a journey. One thing’s for sure: it’s almost impossible to remain still when he’s playing. This year, we’re psyked to see Psyops return to the Circle of Dreams for Vortex Open Source 2016.

Psyops

PSYKED:
Hi Sean! Let’s start at the very beginning (it’s the very best place to start). Do you remember the first time you got behind the decks? We’d love to hear about that definitive moment when you decided to become a DJ.

PSYOPS:
Well, I can’t really remember the first time but it must have been at a friend’s house back in the day – 15 years ago – messing around on vinyl. We rigged big speakers and faced them outside, blasting underground hip hop and DnB but my first gig was at Gonzo’s in Plumstead in 2006. That was a rad moment in my life.

In the Circle of Dreams, rhythms and beats compel beings from all walks of life to move as a collective entity; it is within this safe and magical place that we are able to expand our consciousness, express our innermost emotions and uplift and nourish not only ourselves but our brothers and sisters of life.

Some might say that music and dance is a force powerful enough to change the world if you are open enough to feel it.

Since Technicolor released its debut album in 2013, the duo has continued to wow dance-floors festivals across Cape Town with their cheeky, experimental style. Fuelled by melodic leads, driving bass-lines high-tech breaks, this collab knows how to entice a crowd and rev up the energy. Technicolor will be returning to the Circle of Dreams to perform at Vortex Phoenix Festival 2016.

PSYKED:
Hi guys! Tell me what originally inspired you two to join forces?

TECHNICOLOR:
Howdie, thanks for the interview!  We have been friends for a long time and before we started making music together, there was always a mutual respect for one another’s music. Our musical styles were somewhat similar as we both “grew up” and loved the early Timecode and Nexus Media sound. Sharing some common ground, we decided to make a few vs. tracks and the rest is history.

#WinterVortex: Win double tickets for Phoenix Festival 2016

For centuries, the Winter Solstice has been celebrated by civilisations across the globe. The change of the seasons is significant for a number of reasons, both literal and metaphorical. During this period, the sun is “born again,” awakening us to the fact that nature is ever-shifting; reminding us that to evolve and flourish, we must move with nature and dance to the deity’s divine rhythm.

The celebration of the Solstice serves to reconnect people with planet through a process of ritual, reflection and renewal. As the sun returns, a divine source of creation and life, we give thanks to the universe for its transformation and revival. Just as our physical senses must adapt to the elements that be, so must our focus and understanding change as we begin to perceive the world in a new light once more.

Join us as we celebrate this process of reawakening at the Phoenix Festival of Fire 2016. We are giving away a set of double tickets to the event.  Keep reading to find out more.

#WinterVortex: Exclusive interview with Prefix

Prefix is the psychedelic project of John Vichos. Growing up in Johannesburg, then moving to Cape Town in 2014, Prefix was always musically charged. But it was only after DJing genres such as tech house, minimal and techno for a few years that he discovered his love for psytrance and techno could indeed be merged – and so, Prefix was born. His memorable stage presence and versatile style never fails to attract a crowd. This year, he will be making his debut performance at Vortex Trance Adventures – Phoenix Festival 2016.

prefix psytrance

PSYKED:
Hi John! Tell us about your ascent into psytrance – apparently you attended a festival in 2007 and that’s what got the ball rolling?

PREFIX:
To summarize, I had a buddy from Cape Town who I would see during December holidays when I would go travel to the coast from Johannesburg with my family. We would swap the music. Being from Cape Town with its exploding psychedelic culture, most of what he would share with me was psytrance. It became infectious, and eventually I had him take me to my first outdoor which was Earthdance Cape Town in 2007. It was the first time I had ever experienced music and a gathering with such effortless power; it was truly a gathering of tribes. That’s when I got bitten by the bug.
