Review: Labyrinth’s 9th Birthday “Tranceformation”

On the 9th of August, Labyrinth returned in full-force to celebrate its 9th Birthday “Tranceformation” at a brand new venue. I’ll admit, I was hesitant about moving the event away from all-popular Trinity. But by the time I arrived at the scene of QV54, the place was bustling with party-goers from far and near and I was convinced that Lab had made the right choice.

REVIEW: Azax Syndrome live @TheSideShowCT

On Saturday night I attended the official Sunflower Festival warm-up party. The main attraction was, of course, the incredible Azax Syndrom who visited us all the way from Israel. 1009707_621336314567603_523242635_o

As you can see, the decor was deliciously enticing.  The Side Show went ALL OUT reinventing themselves into a vibrant hub of eye candy, and they pulled it off in true psy spirit.

Special thanks to Myles Design for the  psychedelic liquid tree and mushrooms that enchanted my eyeballs everytime I glanced at the DJ booth. Not only was the setup spectacular, the music was out of this world. Azax Syndrome delivered a truly KILLER set. Let’s just say, you know a pro when you hear one.

The dance floor was alive with true appreciation for the music and when peering about I met many friendly faces, all plastered with smiles. 1265864_621316451236256_1187437932_o

When Azax played his hit Knfe Party remix the crowd went wild. I managed to get a backstage pass and recorded this little video on my phone. (Excuse the awful quality).

What a cool guy. I’m so stoked I got to meet him, shake his hand and snap this picture while he was behind the decks.

Deliriant followed after with high-energy psy beats that kept us jamming til the early hours of the morning and sHiFt finished things off with a bang. 1175162_621332794567955_911721984_n From the left: DeliriantAzax and sHiFt. Photo by Dreamer.

Azax returns to South Africa- get your trance boots ready.

Everyone’s getting psyked for outdoor season but let’s not forget one especially exciting party that’s to be had on Saturday night at The Side Show. What’s all the hullabaloo about you ask? Well, Azax Syndrom is returning to the Cape of Good Dope (I mean hope). Don’t worry if you missed his mind blowing set at One World Festival (watch the video here), you can catch him live, loud and lucid this weekend. Find out all the event details here.

A little bit of background about the man behind the decks?
Like most of of the Psy Greats, Regev Azaria (AKA: Azax) is Israeli. His musical career began when he was a lead singer of a heavy metal group in the early 90’s. However, when he was introduced to electronic music and the psytrance culture, his fascination took over and so decided to start making his own music at the beginning of 2003.

azax

The combination of Regev’s musical background with his psytrance influence is what gave birth to the banging beats of Azax Syndrome.  Ever since, Azax has been touring the globe and playing at every significant stage and festival on the psy map.  He has collaborated with top international DJs such as BLiSS, and continues to delight our ears with power trance that’s true to form.

His music?
One might call it power trance, but really it’s a roller-coaster ride consisting of high-energy, cutting edge sounds, heavy riffs, crisp metal melodies, pumping baselines and heavy beats, all ingeniously fused together.

So, get your trance boots ready because I have no doubt the dance floor’s going to be PUMPING. What’s a better way to warm up for The Sunflower Festival?

Review: Beartrap- Mystical Contact

So, Monday is here. Time to put our party hats away and our thinking caps back on – for now.
But before you do that, let’s reflect on the weekend’s highlights.

On Saturday night I had the pleasure of psyking out to the legendary
Eddie Zaltsman (Mystical Complex) and Didy Ezra (Bizzare Contact) at the Side Show,
one of Cape Town’s hottest venues right now). These psy-sensations had the
crowed bouncing, swaying and stomping til they simply couldn’t anymore.

Along with psyko international tunes and a kick-ass lineup, that included local talent like PortalPsyDJay MarkSwaysHiFt, Flyp PSyd, Sci Lab (Mungus Fungus), Chemogen & D Ranged,
the “day of the dead” themed decor was absolutely mind-blowing.

Snapshots I took at the party.

It’s evident that the organisers went the extra mile to ensure
a great party experience for all. The “Fez Face” was psyked out for the occasion with
flower-power projection mapping, and everywhere I looked, from the ceiling to the DJ box,
I was greeted with majestic eye candy.

The event was made extra special by the Día de Muertos performers (from fire-breathers to
hula-hoopers), who were transformed with body-art by Michaela Young and Mix Makeup. Super cool.

It certainly was a mystical night. From the tight security to the awesome decor, vibrant atmosphere
and the love that pumped all the way through, thank you Beartrap Productions for making it happen.
Having been involved in the trance scene for over ten years, their experience and expertise shine through. They know how to throw a killer party.
Can’t wait for the next one!
