#WinterVortex: Exclusive interview with Technicolor

Technicolor is the collaborative psytrance project of local legend Shane Renew (aka Deliriant) and the Finnish producer Peter Lehto (aka Mad Piper). Since Technicolor released its debut album in 2013, the duo has continued to wow dance-floors festivals across Cape Town with their cheeky, experimental style. Fuelled by melodic leads, driving bass-lines high-tech breaks, this collab knows how to entice a crowd and rev up the energy. Technicolor will be returning to the Circle of Dreams to perform at Vortex Phoenix Festival 2016.

PSYKED:
Hi guys! Tell me what originally inspired you two to join forces?

TECHNICOLOR:
Howdie, thanks for the interview!  We have been friends for a long time and before we started making music together, there was always a mutual respect for one another’s music. Our musical styles were somewhat similar as we both “grew up” and loved the early Timecode and Nexus Media sound. Sharing some common ground, we decided to make a few vs. tracks and the rest is history.

Azax returns to South Africa- get your trance boots ready.

Everyone’s getting psyked for outdoor season but let’s not forget one especially exciting party that’s to be had on Saturday night at The Side Show. What’s all the hullabaloo about you ask? Well, Azax Syndrom is returning to the Cape of Good Dope (I mean hope). Don’t worry if you missed his mind blowing set at One World Festival (watch the video here), you can catch him live, loud and lucid this weekend. Find out all the event details here.

A little bit of background about the man behind the decks?
Like most of of the Psy Greats, Regev Azaria (AKA: Azax) is Israeli. His musical career began when he was a lead singer of a heavy metal group in the early 90’s. However, when he was introduced to electronic music and the psytrance culture, his fascination took over and so decided to start making his own music at the beginning of 2003.

azax

The combination of Regev’s musical background with his psytrance influence is what gave birth to the banging beats of Azax Syndrome.  Ever since, Azax has been touring the globe and playing at every significant stage and festival on the psy map.  He has collaborated with top international DJs such as BLiSS, and continues to delight our ears with power trance that’s true to form.

His music?
One might call it power trance, but really it’s a roller-coaster ride consisting of high-energy, cutting edge sounds, heavy riffs, crisp metal melodies, pumping baselines and heavy beats, all ingeniously fused together.

So, get your trance boots ready because I have no doubt the dance floor’s going to be PUMPING. What’s a better way to warm up for The Sunflower Festival?

Weekend Psyk: DigiCult LIVE @ the Side Show.

DigiCultThis Saturday, in celebration of reaching the 14 000 fan mark, Cape Town Trance Parties will transform the Side Show into the Psyd Show.

And you know what that means, right? A jam-packed evening of grooving beats, happy stompers, enticing eye candy and plenty of psyk… but wait, it gets better. Not only does the lineup feature insanely skilled local DJs, Cape Town Trance Parties presents DigiCult, the Belgium psy king.

DigiCult was founded in 2003. Ever since, they have been working their way up the psy ladder. These guys have travelled all over the globe to deliver psychadelic madness to the ears of thousands, from Sweden to Ukrain, Greece, Brazil and even Cancun. They’ve played at some of the biggest and well known festivals, including the Tree of Life Festival,  Ozora and Vision Quest. And now DigiCult is ready to venture into Africa’s trance capital, on a mission to tear Cape Town apart, beat by beat.

Their sound is best described as deep, intelligent full-on morning, with a gentle oldschool touch – guaranteed to keep the dance floor pumping.
If you don’t know of DigiCult, take a listen to this special set recorded at Tribal Roots.

Review: Labyrinth ALIVE.

On Saturday night I had the privilege of attending Labyrinth ALIVE.  As usual, the event was hosted at Trinity, which just so happens to be my all-time favourite place to stomp indoors.
So, what is there to love about  Labyrinth the end of the day? Aren’t all trance parties the same?

The answer is NO! Ask anyone who has attended a Labyrinth event; I’m positive they’ll agree, they are always extremely well organised, awesomely decorated and feature some of the best local and international psy artists to hit Cape Town. Although the queue at the door was rather long, once I entered the venue I knew that it was worth the wait. The music was pumping at full-force, people were getting wild and the visuals… Well, I think the photographs speak for themselves.

As promised, party-goers were visually enticed with tanatalisingly trippy decor and stage design by LumiNOS Decor and Myles Design, as well as a live VJ display from Frank Latter Visuals.

This time around, I was lucky enough to jam my feet off to Sub6,
the Israeli psy sensation all the way from Tele Viv.
His set articulated everything the event stood for, total liveliness and upbeat energy.

The killer lineup also included DJs: Danalog, Stereotype, Feedback and HEADROOM and an insane closing set from Deliriant. The dancefloor was vibrant and buzzing with stomping feet, swaying hips and many smiling faces, all the way through.
