Interview with Loophole: Emanation EP Launch

Ever since he cracked into the South African psytrance scene, Benjamin Loggenberg aka Loophole has been making waves which – some might say – are incredibly large for a producer his age. At nineteen years old, Loophole has already performed at some of Cape Town’s biggest events alongside both local and international headliners. The dark and bouncy Loophole sound tells a story that guides the listener on a journey through the future with its edgy synths and twisted beats. On the 24th of March, Loophole will release his debut EP Emanation with Los-Angeles-based Mechanik Records. We caught up with Loophole ahead of the EP launch party which is going down at Bazinga Bar this Friday.

Loophole EP Emanation

PSYKED:
Hey Benjamin. Thanks for chatting to us today. Last year was a big year for you. You got signed by Mechanik Records in February and went on to play at some serious events in and around Cape Town. Tell us a bit about how it all began; when did you first discover psytrance?

LOOPHOLE:
Thank you so much, guys! It truly has been an amazing journey so far and I’m extremely blessed to have progressed so much in such a short amount of time. Around May/June 2014 my good friend, Jonathan Roberts, took me to my first Ultranoize indoor party. I was absolutely amazed by the genre, the culture as well as the powerful sound that was produced that night. Instantly I knew I found something special, but at the time I had no intention of ever DJing or producing psytrance. Later that year I went to a few outdoor festivals and as time went on I fell more and more in love with this beautiful genre – ESPECIALLY the night-time psytrance.

PSYKED:
You’ve mentioned before that Rubix Qube is your mentor; what’s the greatest thing that you’ve learned under his guidance?

LOOPHOLE:
Kieron (Rubix Qube) is an absolute genius and him taking me under his wing has been an incredible privilege for me. I wouldn’t even know where to start to be honest. But if there’s one thing that stands out for me – or something I’ve learnt from him throughout this journey – it’s that it’s sometimes just as important to break the rules or protocol of music and producing, or to keep trying out random things you never thought might work, because it may just lead to something amazing (like an epic lead or percussion loop, for example).

PSYKED:
Is there anyone else in the scene who’s been instrumental in shaping your career?

LOOPHOLE:
For sure. There have been many people who played a big role in my career thus far! I would like to give special thanks to every single person who made it possible for me to get to where I am today: God, for being my anchor and my rock throughout the best and the worst of times, Rubix Qube (Kieron Grieves), Roy Insanix (Label Owner at Mechanik Records), Sci-Lab (Craig Marsh), Mystrix (Nicci Nabal), Dyce (Rory de Wet), Siren (Nicholas van Wyk) as well as my amazing family and friends who have pushed me, motivated me and supported far more than I can ever ask for or deserve.

PSYKED:
One thing we can’t help but notice when listening to your tracks are the great synths and samples you use. Do you ever sample things yourself or do you stick to digital samples?

LOOPHOLE:
Honestly, I love the combination of both. I love making my own synths and sounds as well as using digital samples provided in sample packs. I always make it my own by manipulating the sound and tweaking it not to sound like the original! I always aim to have different sounds and different styles of sounds in all my tracks.

PSYKED:
What’s the one piece of software, equipment or technology that you could never live without?

LOOPHOLE:
Hmmmmm. This is very difficult to answer because the software and equipment I use are all useless on their own but when used intertwined they can make magic! The answer would be my software (DAW) I use to produce, Cubase, my soundcard and my studio monitor speakers.

PSYKED:
Loophole is a name that’s been popping up on line-ups almost every single week. What was the most memorable event you’ve played at so far and why?

LOOPHOLE:
Definitely TRANSylvania: Redemption Island which happened in November 2016. This was an incredible milestone for me in my music career and standing in front of all those people gave me endless goose-bumps. I will never forget that amazing experience and having all my close friends at the front supporting me was unreal! I will never know how to thank JP Roelofse (Owner and Organiser of TRANSylvania) enough for that incredible opportunity and I look forward to playing at the next one happening in May 2016 (TRANSylvania: Redemption Island part 2).

PSYKED:
If you could make it onto any line-up, locally or abroad, what would it be?

LOOPHOLE:
Definitely Alien Safari: Sprung or any Vortex festival. It would be a massive honour for me to be booked for one of these festivals; I think that my style would work well and that I could make them proud!

South African Psytrance

PSYKED:
What has been the hardest lesson you’ve had to learn since you embarked on your musical journey?

LOOPHOLE:
Time doesn’t wait for anyone and if you want something done, you’re going to have to put in the time and effort yourself. Nobody is going to do it for you and if you have a dream, you need to take EXTREME ownership of your life and make it happen.

South Africa Trance Party

PSYKED:
Do you have any tips for other up-and-comers who hope to make a name for themselves?

LOOPHOLE:
Network, network, network! In this industry it’s all about who you know and if you want to make a name for yourselves you’re going to need people that have your back. Obviously, you need to have talent and your music needs to speak for itself, but other than that networking is second on the list.

PSYKED:
Before we wrap things up, what four tracks can we expect on your EP?

LOOPHOLE:
1) Loophole – Emanation
2) Loophole – Blindspot
3) Loophole vs ReFractor – Psymatix
4) Loophole – Triple X

Loophole’s debut EP Emanation will be available exclusively though Beatport. Visit the event page to find out how you can win a free copy at the launch party this Friday!

Review: Vortex Parallel Universe 2016

After a self-imposed trance party hiatus for the past four months, I was really looking forward to Vortex Parallel Universe. Easter Vortex, as it’s affectionately known, has always had a special place in my heart; not only is it hosted at my all-time favourite venue but each year it promises a stellar line-up that can’t be missed.

Die-hard Vortexers may swear by the Circle of Dreams but in my humble opinion, Hillside Farm is an equally magical venue with its enchanted forest-like atmosphere and majestic canopies. This year, the dance-floor was moved ever so slightly – creating more space for stompers to get wild. And I loved how the arrangement of stalls made the party seem like a little gypsy village.

After arriving on Sunday morning, we were shocked to see how many people were leaving the party due to hectic weather conditions the night before. Nevertheless, we were prepared to weather the weather for this worthy cause! We arrived in time to catch the last bit of Deliriant (or rather the King of Psy) before Avalon came on, taking us on rhythmic journey which left me with goosebumps.
