Interview with Technology (Brazil) ahead of Jungala Festival 2017

Technology is the psytrance project of Fernando Ribeiro who hails from Porto Alegre in the South of Brazil. Created in 2009, Technology’s musical style fluctuates between night-time and day-time orientated sounds, ranging from 134 to 146 BPM. Expect short breaks, frantic synths and varied bass lines that take you on a journey through the subconscious.

We were fortunate enough to chat with Technology ahead of his first-ever performance in South Africa at PsynOpticz presents Jungala Festival 2017.

PSYKED:
Hi Fernando! Thanks for chatting with us. First off, tell us a bit more about yourself.  When did you first discover psytrance, and when did you decide you wanted to become a producer?

TECHNOLOGY:
Hi guys! First off, thank you for this interview. I initially discovered psytrance when I was 15 years old and attended a party in Porto Alegre with Astrix on the line up. I decided that I wanted to become a producer when I was 18 after seeing a friend play – I remember feeling very moved by the fact that of DJ could send a subliminal message through music to the people.

And the beat goes on: Celebrating 21 years of Vortex with Grant Dreyer

The legendary Vortex celebrates 21 years of pure psychedelic bliss this year at the iconic Circle of Dreams. With more than two decades in the running, the Vortex name has become synonymous with psytrance not only locally but on a global spectrum. In this exclusive interview, we chat to the one and only Grant Dreyer – the man behind the magic.

Throughout his evolutionary journey, Grant has continued to live out his dream, spread the love and rally the troops for one of Cape Town’s most celebrated occasions; his dedication to the dance and his belief in the perfect party is clearly reflected in the alchemy of every seamless Vortex event. But what does it take to plan the perfect Vortex party remaining true to one’s own philosophy and having fun to boot? Let’s take a look behind the scenes.

PSYKED:
Thank you for joining us Grant and congratulations on the 21st anniversary of Vortex Trance Adventures. Wow. 21 years is a long time! Tell us a bit about the first ever Vortex Party; what was it like and how did it come about?

GRANT:
Hi! Thank you very much for doing this. 21 Years, it’s been a pretty wild ride! The first Vortex party was Essence of Fluorescence, and it was held in a warehouse in Woodstock, 21 years ago. Vortex originally came about as an attempt to be the first Electronic Dance Music nightclub in South Africa. When friends of ours came back from the UK and told us about the warehouse parties that they had been going to on that side, we decided to start it up in South Africa.

Review: Labyrinth’s 9th Birthday “Tranceformation”

On the 9th of August, Labyrinth returned in full-force to celebrate its 9th Birthday “Tranceformation” at a brand new venue. I’ll admit, I was hesitant about moving the event away from all-popular Trinity. But by the time I arrived at the scene of QV54, the place was bustling with party-goers from far and near and I was convinced that Lab had made the right choice.

Azax returns to South Africa- get your trance boots ready.

Everyone’s getting psyked for outdoor season but let’s not forget one especially exciting party that’s to be had on Saturday night at The Side Show. What’s all the hullabaloo about you ask? Well, Azax Syndrom is returning to the Cape of Good Dope (I mean hope). Don’t worry if you missed his mind blowing set at One World Festival (watch the video here), you can catch him live, loud and lucid this weekend. Find out all the event details here.

A little bit of background about the man behind the decks?
Like most of of the Psy Greats, Regev Azaria (AKA: Azax) is Israeli. His musical career began when he was a lead singer of a heavy metal group in the early 90’s. However, when he was introduced to electronic music and the psytrance culture, his fascination took over and so decided to start making his own music at the beginning of 2003.

azax

The combination of Regev’s musical background with his psytrance influence is what gave birth to the banging beats of Azax Syndrome.  Ever since, Azax has been touring the globe and playing at every significant stage and festival on the psy map.  He has collaborated with top international DJs such as BLiSS, and continues to delight our ears with power trance that’s true to form.

His music?
One might call it power trance, but really it’s a roller-coaster ride consisting of high-energy, cutting edge sounds, heavy riffs, crisp metal melodies, pumping baselines and heavy beats, all ingeniously fused together.

So, get your trance boots ready because I have no doubt the dance floor’s going to be PUMPING. What’s a better way to warm up for The Sunflower Festival?

PARTY REVIEW: Bliss @TheSideShowCT

On Saturday night, I had the pleasure of swaying to the beats of Israeli, A-lister: Yonatan Marcow, better known as BLiSS.

Now that the party is over and the hangovers have subsided (hopefully!) was all the hype really worth it? The answer is yes, yes and yes! The Psyd Show never disappoints, and as usual, the crazily popular venue was pimped out to cater to all our psychadelic needs with great decor, thundering bass and a helluva lineup that took stompers from one amazing set to the next. It’s no surprise that the dancefloor was buzzing ’til the very end.

Downstairs, on the main stage, Hektek Elektrek and Gokon Rave warmed up the crowd before STEREOTYPE (SA) took over, followed by the much loved tunes of HEADROOM.

By the time he was finished rocking our faces off, we were frothing for the night’s main attraction:  BLiSS. Now, I don’t know about you but ever since I heard  BLiSS for the first time, I knew I had to jam to this man live, in the flesh. So when I heard that Aurora – SA was bringing the psy god to our beautiful city, I was just ecstatic. Not only did I experience an amazing set from Bliss upclose and personal on Saturday, things reached epic heights when the man himself shook my hand. I know, the DJ love is overwhelming. I am sure I was not the only one who suffered a little heart attack when he took out his guitar. Now, that’s some hardcore talent!

Snapshots I took from backstage of Raider and Bliss with his guitar (excuse the bad quality).

I had a great time jamming backstage as the lovely Tune Raider got behind the decks while Bliss finished off, blasting one of my favourite tracks: “A Walk In The Park” from his psyd project: The A-Team. You can listen to it here.

Upstairs, the beats were just as banging. It was really tough trying to decide which dancefloor to stomp at. Things started off in full volume with Wulfsohn, and the Fundamentals, who were absolutely infuckingsane. Check them out!

fundamentals

They were closely followed by the bouncing sounds of  Infectious (SA) and things only got hotter when Portal took over the decks, as well as the great DJ Bruce, Plusminus and up-and-coming psy superstar: Drang3d.

What a great party. Thank you to Aurora – SA, The Psyd Show and of course, Yonatan Marcow. Special thanks to My City By Night for the free bottle of vodka, mixers and reserved table, and to all those who jammed with me front-left, I definitely felt the love. It’s safe to say the event was a huge success. Smiles all around.
