PSYKED:
Hi Toby! Let’s start at the beginning: what genres lead you to become a progressive trance producer and DJ? Is it true that you come from a Punk background?

QUEROX:
Hey. First of all, it’s so nice to be here with you 🙂 Well *laughs* yes, this is true. You know those crazy times – the guitar on your back, dyed hair and very big shoes, eager to go to all the crazy Punk Rock Concerts in your country. I was the singer/songwriter and guitarist of my band called Vis; we played 100 % garage punk rock. I also had another band called Prypjat that was hardcore D-Beat. It was great.

One night, all of the sudden, I went to the wrong party, and they played this insane electronic music that they called psytrance. At that point I totally fell in love with it. Step by step, I got my own equipment together to start making my first mix. I kept mixing and training really hard for a quite few years, annoying all my neighbours, before I started to perform. The musical background that I had from before really helps me nowadays in production.

Review: One World NYE Festival.

After much anticipation, I awoke bright and early, ready to hit the road to One World NYE Festival.
We arrived at Le Bac in Paarl, just as the gates opened. After a bit of a wait in the queue, we set-up camp.

————————————————————————————————————-

————————————————————————————————————-

I heard the beats of Rekkerin & Sorcery starting up in the distance. Following suit was Flip Psyd, Pulse, Absolence and the Fundamentals who played a remix of Ranji’s hit-track
“New Ways.” Listen HERE.

By the time Switch got on stage, things were cooking so I made the wise decision to go off in search of the river. Nestled beneath the trees, I found it. The cool water called out to me. Sun-kissed bodies lazed along the river banks in the shade while others enjoyed a quick dip.

At 8 p.m. I set foot onto the dancefloor and was genuinely blown away by how far One World has come since their first event in 2012. The visual production was taken to the next level by decor specialists from Finland, Flowers of Life. There was even an inflatable pool to cool-off in without missing a single set.

I looked up to see Ghostrider behind the decks, delivering his deeply atmospheric beats to the crowd as the sun set. Next on the lineup was Freedom Fighters (who I was aching to see live!) My expectations were more than exceeded as the highly-accredited prog Master put out beat after beautiful beat.

Then Coming Soon took over. Their vibrant stage-presence and mind-altering tracks kept the crowd electrified as the New Year rolled closer. Listen HERE.
I dragged my friends behind me as I forced my way to the very front of the dancefloor.  I was practically frothing with excitement when both members of Coming Soon (Irad Brunt and Dui Bitton) jumped up onto the speakers during the countdown. There was nowhere else in the world I would rather have been. When the clock struck twelve, the confetti went flying and the vibe only got better from there.

Both Azax Syndrom and Bliss had blown me away when they played at The Side Show during indoor season. Now they were back in my hometown, performing together under a starry sky. These guys aren’t just pushing buttons, they’re really making music. What an honour it was to be jamming on that dancefloor!

Orca took over where Azax Syndrom left off, playing his legendary “Sad Movies” remix. Sinful Reactions, Twisted Circus and Mr. Jack had the witching hours covered, while Up-Psy-Down kept everyone jamming through the sun-rise. All-mighty A-Team gave stompers a good morning work-out before Beartrap’s leading lady, Sway, took control of the day-jam. Her set was so hypnotically dynamic, you just couldn’t help but get lost in the beautiful noise. What a great way to end off a magical New Year’s celebration!

————————————————————————————

Unfortunately I was not able to cover all three-days but listening to D-rang3D’s sunrise set makes me feel like I was there. You can download it for free HERE.

Thank you to all the friendly party-goers who treated me with such kindness. One World reminded me of the “one love” mentality that can so easily be forgotten at festivals. Another thank you goes out to the Fourth Dimension crew. For a second-time-round event, nobody could have asked for more.

On a more serious note, Psyked in the City extends our condolences to the friends and family of the individual who passed away after the One World Event.  After receiving special attention from the event’s paramedics, she was rushed off to hospital but unfortunately did not make it. On this note, we would like to wish everyone a safe and healthy New Year.
Remember that festivals can be dangerous. Be aware, party responsibly.

Review: Rezonance NYE.

Rezonance is easily one of the most anticipated events on the psytrance calendar. With years of experience behind their name, the Rezonance family has gained huge momentum and continues to attract thousands of loyal party-goers from all over South Africa to celebrate the New Year.

Following the previous theme of Transformation, the festival focused itself on rebirth. With a very relevant call-to-action for the New Year: dream of a world where anything is possible. “I am because we are” was the resonating mantra and its essence trickled down to every element of production.

Rezonance decided to switch things up this year, kick-starting the party on New Years Eve. When I arrived at Contermanskloof in Durbanville, I was in for a big surprise! The out-of-this-universe decor had plenty of jaws dropping in delight. Artescape really went above and beyond to create the type of high-end production that could give Ozora festival a run for its money. We have a sneaky suspicion that the Rezonance pics will be taking over Facebook feeds for the next few weeks.

Rezonance ticked all the boxes, from groovy swing at Misfits Meadow to dirty dubstep at the Delta stage to full-on, psychedelic tunes at the main stage. And when you weren’t feeling the magic anymore, the Chill Temple was a perfect hangout for tired souls (or should I say soles).

The dam was also a Godsend in 34 degrees heat! During the day-time it remained occupied by happy people and inflatable lilos. Let’s not forget the random boat spotted floating about.

Of course, it was the Prizm stage that was the main attraction. When I set foot onto the dancefloor, I was sucked in by proggy beats from the likes of Portal, Humerous and Matron. Then Bernz, Take and Contra took over, leading us into the New Year.

I could literally feel the spirits lifting as the clock struck twelve. Frozen Ghost was the first of many killer DJs to rock 2014. I don’t think anyone expected things to get that messy, that mud was really something! If you were clean the next morning, you clearly did it wrong.

For those who couldn’t keep up with the 180 BPM tracks from the German Bombax or the banging basslines of Hysteria and Paralocks, the Misfits Meadow was an ideal spot to lay-back and enjoy the vibe. It was there that Hektek Elektrek and Wulfsohn kept the crowd jamming merrily into the early hours of morning.

At some point, I dragged myself off to my tent for some much-needed sleep (not that I got any). I knew I had gotten more than I paid for, in terms of sound, because I could hear all three dancefloors bass resonating through our campsite at any given time.

I returned to the Prizm stage for Tune Raider’s must-jam morning set feeling bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. As the sun got cooking, the beats got groovier with Headroom behind the decks, followed by Sad Paradise and my personal favourite, Mr Suit (the Israeli prog hero).

In the evening, I was blown away by Rosa Ventura.
Then equally gobsmacked by
Deliriant’s midnight set.

Time was flying by. When I awoke the next morning, I heard Talisman in the distance, delivering some delicious beats for breakfast. Although the sun was already baking, it didn’t dull any spirits. On the dancefloor, nobody was prepared to let a single track go to waste. I was more than grateful for the over-head sprinklers, as I was beginning to feel a little crispy.

Other highlights included Sonic Species, England’s psychedelic King and the always-amazing Broken ToyGandalf Grey rounded things off beautifully with a mix of one of my favourite tracks “WTF by D-Addiction.”

Rezonance made no room for bad vibes, or shoes for that matter. I returned home with dirty feet, a happy heart and the tunes still ringing in my ears. A big thank-you to the organisers and party-goers for exceeding all my expectations. Best New Years ever!
