Karl Douglas, better known as SiLO, fell in love with psytrance at the early age of sixteen. Although he never envisioned becoming a DJ, he has always been musically inclined. While his friends were enjoying the playground, SiLO was playing the piano; and at the age of fourteen, he decided to add guitar to his list of musical talents. But it wasn’t until he attended a Mushroom Mafia party that he first considered producing and playing psytrance. SiLO’s earliest influences include Cosma, BLT, Protoculture and some of the old Nano Records material. His melodic and driving beats tell entrancing stories that captivate the listener. Catch him at Altered States – LUNAR for a two-hour set on Sunday, the 12th of March, from 13:00 to 15:00.
Hi Karl! First off, tell us what it is about psytrance music that appeals to you personally? What got you hooked into this genre, initially?
I would say [it’s] originality of the psytrance dance-floor to any genre of music. The underground Scarborough, Chapman’s Peak parties in the early 2000s were the first trance parties I attended while growing up in Hout Bay, and I was immediately hooked. I loved how the music spread across the landscapes, echoing freely – there’s something about the way psytrance travels outside – and the whole concept of camping out for the weekend with your friends; making new mates and connections; having new experiences with no judgement, and just good’ol rad vibes. Psytrance is like no other genre; there is a culture behind it than runs deeper than anything I have experienced in music. I fell in love attending my first outdoor party. It’s crazy to think that Earthdance Cape Town was born sixteen years ago – I was only six at the time. What’s more impressive is the fact that Earthdance International has been going since 1996. Having grown up in Cape Town, I regularly heard whispers about the event and consequently, decided that it would be the outdoor festival I’d attend upon turning eighteen. Since then, celebrating my Birthday at Earthdance has become a tradition (one that I hope will continue far into future) and this year was no different. On the 19th of September 2015, we were on the road to Nekkies Resort in Worcester once again. We arrived just after lunch and right in time for a good helping of Dan Scot’s progilicious beats.
By the time we set up camp, K Fox had taken over. The sun was out – a true reminder that outdoor season had begun. We explored the venue a little and I allowed my bass-loving friends to steer me into the DnB tent. When we finally made our way towards the psy stage, my eyes were greeted by something from a fairytale. Fanciful colours cascaded down from the imaginative Sky Temple – created by the talented Carin Dickson of Artescape. (Another notable display of incredible arts and culture could be found in the Psychedelic Dream Temple with its entrancing array of visionary artwork). Earthdance Cape Town remains one of the most anticipated events on the psytrance calendar; and now the time is nearing to unite in a dance for peace once again.
Located at the organisation’s long time home, Nekkies Resort in Worcester, this year’s edition promises to ignite spirits and enthral ears with a line-up featuring some of the best psytrance acts from near and far. International headliners include Lifeforms (Iono Records), Earthspace (Mosaico Records) and Virtual Light (Zero 1 Music).
Awakening is the theme of choice for Earthdance Cape Town 2015; join us as we focus on awaking ourselves and the world around us so we may activate our ideas and build a better earth for all.
In light of this, we are proud to announce another exciting addition to the upcoming event: the Psychedelic Dream Temple, a visionary mobile art gallery which will be showcasing artwork from around the globe.

The great thing about hitting a trance party on Sunday is the fact that you get to climb into your bed after all is said and done; but that never makes it any easier to get up at six in the morning. After dragging my lazy self out of bed at the crack of dawn, we were on route to Nekkies. A few hours later, arm-bands and all, we had arrived at our destination.
I wasted no time in heading to the Sky Temple; the party was in full swing as Zezia finished up his set. But what struck me was the décor. It’s no secret that Artescape is famed for their mind-altering displays but this was something else entirely. Was it a psychedelic Taj Mahal or simply the best stage set-up I had ever seen? I don’t know; one thing’s for sure, Earthdance continues to amaze me, year after year. Continue reading Review: Earthdance Cape Town 2014 (Sunday)→
