As 2017 comes to a close, we’re looking back at some of the best outdoor music festivals of the year. Jungala Festival, hosted by PsynOpticz Records at the ever-popular Buffalo Drift venue on the Berg river, is one of the largest and most eagerly awaited outdoor festivals on the psytrance calendar. This year, PsynOpticz transported its party-goers to what felt like a slice of paradise and we’d like to take a moment to relive some of the memories.
Ridiculously awesome decor by ZARAZbrought the Isle of Jungala to life this year (with jungle totems and the circle designed by Christopher Dowding and decorated by Artescape) while entrancing lighting and mind-blowing sound from Magnetic Storm Cape Town provided a powerful visual and audio experience that won’t soon be forgotten. In fact, we feel like inserting a few heart-eyed emojis just thinking about it. If you weren’t there, fear not. We’re going to fill you in on what you missed.

Prefix is the psychedelic project of John Vichos. Growing up in Johannesburg, then moving to Cape Town in 2014, Prefix was always musically charged. But it was only after DJing genres such as tech house, minimal and techno for a few years that he discovered his love for psytrance and techno could indeed be merged – and so, Prefix was born. His memorable stage presence and versatile style never fails to attract a crowd. This year, he will be making his debut performance at Vortex Trance Adventures – Phoenix Festival 2016.
Hi John! Tell us about your ascent into psytrance – apparently you attended a festival in 2007 and that’s what got the ball rolling?
To summarize, I had a buddy from Cape Town who I would see during December holidays when I would go travel to the coast from Johannesburg with my family. We would swap the music. Being from Cape Town with its exploding psychedelic culture, most of what he would share with me was psytrance. It became infectious, and eventually I had him take me to my first outdoor which was Earthdance Cape Town in 2007. It was the first time I had ever experienced music and a gathering with such effortless power; it was truly a gathering of tribes. That’s when I got bitten by the bug.
Psy Mantis is the progressive DJ project of Craig Horn. With over 11 years of experience in the local psytrance scene, Psy Mantis is known for delivering the chunkiest beats to his loyal listeners. His musical style can be described as dirty progressive with an emphasis on banging bass lines and cheeky vocals. This year, he’s set to make an appearance at Vortex Trance Adventures – PHOENIX FESTIVAL on the 24th of June 2016. We caught up with him ahead of the big event.
Hi Craig! First off, let me congratulate you on becoming the label head for Natural Beat Makerz Records in South Africa. What inspired you to make the move from PSR Records?
PSY MANTIS: PSR Music was a great label. It was where I found my sound: fat, dirty and chunky. But life is change. I started finding what I liked on other labels as well. When some of the PSR Music producers moved over to NBM Records, I took a real look at the label and saw it was run like a family with full support of all artist and DJs. So, it was just the next logical step. Continue reading #WinterVortex: Exclusive interview with Psy Mantis→

Sci Lab, or rather Craig Marsh, discovered psytrance at the age of eighteen. During 2007, he studied sound engineering at Cape Audio College which better equipped him to start producing his own music. A jack-of-all-trades, Sci Lab is involved in many business ventures and projects. In 2010, he co-founded popular psytrance organisation Mungus Fungus and later, Spectrum and Reboot. His musical style can be described as hard, dark, progressive – and always surprising. Sci Lab’s high-energy performances showcase his keen knowledge of musical software and technology as well as his ability to fine-tune his sounds to suit any dance-floor. Catch Sci Lab at Vortex Parallel Universe for the first time ever on the 26th of March 2016.
Hi Craig! You’re not only a DJ and producer but a successful event organiser; has putting together your own line-ups and booking artists enabled you to make better music? Surely, you must know what gets the crowds going.
SCI LAB: Hi Batia; thank you for this opportunity to chat about the psytrance community. Organising events has given me the understanding of how an event should flow and has definitely helped me out in my track selection as a DJ. As a producer, I am still trying to find my feet – Djing and production are two different ball games! Production requires a whole new level of discipline.
