Review: Beartrap Ground Zero Festival 2014 (Sunday)

On the 15th of March 2014, I awoke during the early hours of the morning – early, as in it was still dark outside – with excitement stirring inside me for the Sunday Session that awaited us at Ground Zero Festival.

We were on route before the sun came up. Nekkies was the venue of choice this year, having been a longtime favourite for major festivals, such as Earthdance, with plenty of space to accommodate three (yes, three!) stages and a pool to boot.

I was a little bleak about having missed Double-Click and Vini Vici the previous night, not to mention some of my favourite locals and the Insane Intelligent Lighting Display that everyone was raving about. Fortunately however, we arrived just in time for Ultravoice (a legend within the international psytrance community having almost a decade’s worth of experience behind his name).

After a little chocolate tequila for breakfast (shhh, don’t tell my Mom) we were well on our way to psychedelic paradise. The dance floor was heaving when international icon Sesto Sento took the stage. (This was a pretty big moment for me, considering I’m a full-on Sesto freak). Spirits were riding high when he played his famed “Lift me up” mix.

Just listen to those melodies!

————————————————————————————————————————————————

————————————————————————————————————————————————

The sun was glaring by the time Blastoyz began to blast his killer high-tech beats, so I made my way over to the sprinklers at the rear end of the dance floor. There I met a few other drenched partiers. As we revelled, stomping bare-footed in the mud my favourite track “Green Stuff” erupted from the speakers.

————————————————————————————————————————————————

————————————————————————————————————————————————

Sway was on next. The crowd extended a warm Beartrap welcome and you could see that “Mama Bear” was right at home. Her uplifting beats protruded from the DJ box. I didn’t want them to stop for a minute. The hose pipe was going at this point, and the crowd was causing muddy mayhem on the dancefloor.

————————————————————————————————————————————————

————————————————————————————————————————————————

Headroom was behind the decks before I had a chance to recover. I guess it’s true what they say, time flies when you are having fun! I realized I was in a total time warp, going from one killer set to the next, when I glanced up to see Dave Mac was taking over, bringing his proggy tunes to life.

Finally, the big moment had arrived. The all-mighty Berg captured our attention as he climbed onto stage. It’s no secret that he’s become a psy-sensation within the Cape Town trance scene. His popularity seems to escalate every time he graces South Africa with his magic. And it’s no wonder why.

————————————————————————————————————————————————

————————————————————————————————————————————————

Apart from Berg’s dashing Israeli looks, his hard-hitting bass-lines and proggy psychadelic hooks are globally-recognized. As I jammed to esteemed tracks like “Wizdom” and “Limitless” my expectations were well exceeded.

————————————————————————————————————————————————

————————————————————————————————————————————————

What an awesome atmosphere. Cape Town can Berg in my book! Talk about ending the party on a high-note. Big thanks to Beartrap, RP Sound and Lighting, Psylife, Abby and Laura (Sway).
Until next time… Stay #psyked.

Review: One World NYE Festival.

After much anticipation, I awoke bright and early, ready to hit the road to One World NYE Festival.
We arrived at Le Bac in Paarl, just as the gates opened. After a bit of a wait in the queue, we set-up camp.

————————————————————————————————————-

————————————————————————————————————-

I heard the beats of Rekkerin & Sorcery starting up in the distance. Following suit was Flip Psyd, Pulse, Absolence and the Fundamentals who played a remix of Ranji’s hit-track
“New Ways.” Listen HERE.

By the time Switch got on stage, things were cooking so I made the wise decision to go off in search of the river. Nestled beneath the trees, I found it. The cool water called out to me. Sun-kissed bodies lazed along the river banks in the shade while others enjoyed a quick dip.

At 8 p.m. I set foot onto the dancefloor and was genuinely blown away by how far One World has come since their first event in 2012. The visual production was taken to the next level by decor specialists from Finland, Flowers of Life. There was even an inflatable pool to cool-off in without missing a single set.

I looked up to see Ghostrider behind the decks, delivering his deeply atmospheric beats to the crowd as the sun set. Next on the lineup was Freedom Fighters (who I was aching to see live!) My expectations were more than exceeded as the highly-accredited prog Master put out beat after beautiful beat.

Then Coming Soon took over. Their vibrant stage-presence and mind-altering tracks kept the crowd electrified as the New Year rolled closer. Listen HERE.
I dragged my friends behind me as I forced my way to the very front of the dancefloor.  I was practically frothing with excitement when both members of Coming Soon (Irad Brunt and Dui Bitton) jumped up onto the speakers during the countdown. There was nowhere else in the world I would rather have been. When the clock struck twelve, the confetti went flying and the vibe only got better from there.

Both Azax Syndrom and Bliss had blown me away when they played at The Side Show during indoor season. Now they were back in my hometown, performing together under a starry sky. These guys aren’t just pushing buttons, they’re really making music. What an honour it was to be jamming on that dancefloor!

Orca took over where Azax Syndrom left off, playing his legendary “Sad Movies” remix. Sinful Reactions, Twisted Circus and Mr. Jack had the witching hours covered, while Up-Psy-Down kept everyone jamming through the sun-rise. All-mighty A-Team gave stompers a good morning work-out before Beartrap’s leading lady, Sway, took control of the day-jam. Her set was so hypnotically dynamic, you just couldn’t help but get lost in the beautiful noise. What a great way to end off a magical New Year’s celebration!

————————————————————————————

————————————————————————————

Unfortunately I was not able to cover all three-days but listening to D-rang3D’s sunrise set makes me feel like I was there. You can download it for free HERE.

Thank you to all the friendly party-goers who treated me with such kindness. One World reminded me of the “one love” mentality that can so easily be forgotten at festivals. Another thank you goes out to the Fourth Dimension crew. For a second-time-round event, nobody could have asked for more.

On a more serious note, Psyked in the City extends our condolences to the friends and family of the individual who passed away after the One World Event.  After receiving special attention from the event’s paramedics, she was rushed off to hospital but unfortunately did not make it. On this note, we would like to wish everyone a safe and healthy New Year.
Remember that festivals can be dangerous. Be aware, party responsibly.

One World

Azax returns to South Africa- get your trance boots ready.

Everyone’s getting psyked for outdoor season but let’s not forget one especially exciting party that’s to be had on Saturday night at The Side Show. What’s all the hullabaloo about you ask? Well, Azax Syndrom is returning to the Cape of Good Dope (I mean hope). Don’t worry if you missed his mind blowing set at One World Festival (watch the video here), you can catch him live, loud and lucid this weekend. Find out all the event details here.

A little bit of background about the man behind the decks?
Like most of of the Psy Greats, Regev Azaria (AKA: Azax) is Israeli. His musical career began when he was a lead singer of a heavy metal group in the early 90’s. However, when he was introduced to electronic music and the psytrance culture, his fascination took over and so decided to start making his own music at the beginning of 2003.

azax

The combination of Regev’s musical background with his psytrance influence is what gave birth to the banging beats of Azax Syndrome.  Ever since, Azax has been touring the globe and playing at every significant stage and festival on the psy map.  He has collaborated with top international DJs such as BLiSS, and continues to delight our ears with power trance that’s true to form.

His music?
One might call it power trance, but really it’s a roller-coaster ride consisting of high-energy, cutting edge sounds, heavy riffs, crisp metal melodies, pumping baselines and heavy beats, all ingeniously fused together.

So, get your trance boots ready because I have no doubt the dance floor’s going to be PUMPING. What’s a better way to warm up for The Sunflower Festival?
