Interview with Technology (Brazil) ahead of Jungala Festival 2017

Technology is the psytrance project of Fernando Ribeiro who hails from Porto Alegre in the South of Brazil. Created in 2009, Technology’s musical style fluctuates between night-time and day-time orientated sounds, ranging from 134 to 146 BPM. Expect short breaks, frantic synths and varied bass lines that take you on a journey through the subconscious.

We were fortunate enough to chat with Technology ahead of his first-ever performance in South Africa at PsynOpticz presents Jungala Festival 2017.

PSYKED:
Hi Fernando! Thanks for chatting with us. First off, tell us a bit more about yourself.  When did you first discover psytrance, and when did you decide you wanted to become a producer?

TECHNOLOGY:
Hi guys! First off, thank you for this interview. I initially discovered psytrance when I was 15 years old and attended a party in Porto Alegre with Astrix on the line up. I decided that I wanted to become a producer when I was 18 after seeing a friend play – I remember feeling very moved by the fact that of DJ could send a subliminal message through music to the people.

PSYKED:
Your new EP, “Be Weird,” is coming out soon. Would you say the sound on this EP differs from what you’ve released in the past?

TECHNOLOGY:
Be Weird is my new EP that will be released by PsynOpticz. The title is a critique of how society tries to force people to be the same and fit the mould, so be weird my friends!

I would say that this EP is more musically mature compared to my previous releases, but preserves the defining characteristic of Technology. I believe that every song on the EP involved an evolution that required intensive study and experimentation both inside and outside the studio. Art imitates life. And with music, it’s no different. It is the reflection of who we are.

PSYKED:
Tell us a bit more about the journey that you aim to take people on when they listen to your music. What kind of set can we expect to hear at Jungala?

TECHNOLOGY:
I believe that the purpose of an artist’s work is everything. My purpose is to connect people in a moment of total relaxation and happiness, awakening the best in every one of us thus showing the value that each person has. You can expect a psychedelic full-on set with a lot of joy and dedication.

PSYKED:
As one of the artists signed to the South African label PsynOpticz, we’re going to assume you’ve had a taste of our local psytrance before. Are there any South African producers who’ve earned your respect?

TECHNOLOGY:
South Africa is, without doubt, a reference when it comes to psytrance. All artists have my respect but I really admire a lot of South African artists like Headroom, The Commercial Hippies, Floating Grooves, Shift, Broken Toy, Rinkadink and Regan.

Technology and his son blasting together.

PSYKED:

Would you say that South Africa has gained a reputation for its psytrance abroad?

TECHNOLOGY:
For sure, South Africa is considered the Capital of Psytrance, with memorable artists, amazing parties and festivals. Not to mention the decor that always wows people across the globe.

PSYKED:
Who has your most memorable collaboration been with so far?

TECHNOLOGY:
It’s hard to choose just one as I have good collabs with Mental Broadcast and Eclipse Echoes from Brazil as well as Haffman from Mexico. The collab with Haffman will be released on my new EP, Be Weird. I am also in the process of doing a great collab with Hyperflex from Brazil.

PSYKED:
Judging from your Facebook page, the Brazilian psytrance scene is alive and kicking. What’s one event back home that you’d recommend to anyone who plans on visiting Brazil?

TECHNOLOGY:
Yes, here in Brazil the scene is on fire. I recommend Universo Paralello in Bahia and Respect Festival in São Paulo.

PSYKED:
When you’re not behind the decks, how do you usually choose to enjoy the festival experience?

TECHNOLOGY:
I really enjoy camping with my wife and children. I like to watch all the artists I enjoy and eat a lot during the festival *laughs*.

PSYKED:
If you could go back in time and tell your younger self one piece of advice for succeeding in this industry, what would it be?

TECHNOLOGY:
I would say to believe in your dream and dedicate yourself to the max. If you have faith, dedication and discipline in your focus, one day your time will come. Do not let anyone say that you can not do something.

PSYKED:
Thanks Fernando! Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers before we wrap things up?

TECHNOLOGY:
I would like to let everyone know that I am really looking forward to being in South Africa with all of you and to take the work I do with great joy to Cape Town. See you on the dance floor!
