Vortex Phoenix Festival

#WinterVortex: Exclusive interview with Technicolor

Technicolor is the collaborative psytrance project of local legend Shane Renew (aka Deliriant) and the Finnish producer Peter Lehto (aka Mad Piper). Since Technicolor released its debut album in 2013, the duo has continued to wow dance-floors festivals across Cape Town with their cheeky, experimental style. Fuelled by melodic leads, driving bass-lines high-tech breaks, this collab knows how to entice a crowd and rev up the energy. Technicolor will be returning to the Circle of Dreams to perform at Vortex Phoenix Festival 2016.

PSYKED:
Hi guys! Tell me what originally inspired you two to join forces?

TECHNICOLOR:
Howdie, thanks for the interview!  We have been friends for a long time and before we started making music together, there was always a mutual respect for one another’s music. Our musical styles were somewhat similar as we both “grew up” and loved the early Timecode and Nexus Media sound. Sharing some common ground, we decided to make a few vs. tracks and the rest is history.

PSYKED:
What’s the most memorable set you’ve performed together thus far?

TECHNICOLOR:
I’d say our favourite set has to be Alien Safari when we opened for GMS. There is something special about handing over the torch to one of your favourite acts. They are great guys and real “gentlemen” of the scene.

PSYKED:
If you each had to name your favourite tracks right now, what would they be?

TECHNICOLOR:
We’re really digging Filterheads (K.i.M + Microdot) at the moment. It’s a bit darker and faster then what we normally listen to, but their production is top-notch – twisted night-time madness, amazing basslines. We love it. Very stoked they’ll be joining us for Alien Safari in September!

PSYKED:
Name one piece of DJ equipment that you could never live without.

TECHNICOLOR:
3.5mm Headphone Jack. And here is a little tip for any aspiring DJ: never, ever, ever lend it to anyone. You’ll never see it again. We’re looking at you Rubix Cube *winks.*

PSYKED:
In your opinion, what is the greatest thing about our local trance music scene? And how does it compare on an international scale?

TECHNICOLOR:
South Africa has an energy and passion for music like no other, and the fans support their artists religiously. This in turn allows the artist to engage with the fan-base easily at festivals; people know every little nuance in your tracks and are happily discussing it over a beer or tequila (ugh). Apart from this, our warm weather and amazing locations make it top-notch. Most international artists agree that SA is one of their favourite destinations to play.

PSYKED:
Are you guys working on anything special at the moment? When is your next release due?

TECHNICOLOR:
We’ve been working on our 4th EP which we’ll be sharing with the dance-floor at Phoenix Festival of Fire.

PSYKED:
Do you ever a hit creative block? If so, how do you stay motivated and inspired?

TECHNICOLOR:
Yes, it’s something we’re pretty sure every artist goes through at some point. The best way we’ve found to overcome this is to search for new music and artists that inspire us.

PSYKED:
If you could go back in time to give yourself one piece of advice for making it in this industry, what would it be?

TECHNICOLOR:
Buy Google shares at $54 in 2004 (now worth $723). Jokes aside, this is a tough industry to be part of; it’s often financially challenging which leads to having a day job to pay the bills (we both have 9-5 jobs). That being said, it’s also very rewarding to be part of this scene. You get to play your productions in front of thousands of people which is an incredible feeling!

PSYKED:
Before we wrap things up, do you have any epic Vortex memories to share with our followers?

TECHNICOLOR:
Last year’s Phoenix Festival was incredible (read the review); we had a great set, and there is something about a fire party in the middle of winter which really brings people together. Shane also had a full conversation with a tree which made it extra special. We can’t wait for this year’s event, see you there!
