Exclusive interview with Mindwave (IONO Music)

Mindwave, or rather Anton Maiko, was first introduced to psytrance at the early age of six, after he relocated from Russia to Israel and began experimenting with musical software. He went on to studying sound engineering at the BPM College, and later released his debut album “Escape Reality” through Phonokol Records. After receiving worldwide recognition for his atmospheric beats, he signed with IONO Music in 2011.  Mindwave is famed for his revolutionary new style; his psychedelic-infused beats have graced dance floors across the globe including O.Z.O.R.A (Hungary), Vuuv Experience (Germany), Aurora (Greece), Spiritual Healing (Germany), Boom (Portugal), Trishula Festival (Russia) and Tree of Life (Australia).

Mindwave  is set to hit Cape Town later this month for the Sirius SUNDAY Electronic Music Experience at Synergy Live 2014.

These questions were compiled by Batia Efrat on behalf of Psyked in the City.

Psyked:
Hi Anton! It’s such a pleasure to chat with you today. You’ve been producing music for almost ten years. How has your sound evolved since you released your first album in 2009?

Mindwave:
Hi! Thank you for having me. I am always working on my sound. With every track and every release, I am trying to do something different. Sometimes I make something deeper and more atmospheric, other times punchier and more psychedelic. It all depends on my mood in the studio.

Psyked:
Has the psytrance scene changed from when you were first exposed to it, especially considering the technological advancements of today?

Mindwave:
Yes, everything in life has changed with today’s technology. At the parties today, you can find amazing 3D mapping visuals and robotic moving structures. As for producing music, everything becomes more reachable and simply by using some good plugins you can make a full record.

Psyked:
You’re known for incorporating different styles into your music, and tend to steer away from one tried-and-true genre. What inspires you to experiment and explore new horizons? And what do you wish to convey through your particular sound and concept?

Mindwave:
I always try to connect with the crowd through my music and to leave a massage or to share my feelings with them. Everything and everyone can inspire my work, whether it’s a sound I hear outside or a melody I hear in the countries I am visiting. World music is the main source of inspiration for me and I’m just waiting for the next thing I will find.

Psyked:
Mindwave released a number of remixes and collaborations including that of Ace Ventura, Suntree and Midimal, how do you go about selecting tracks to work with?

Mindwave:
I choose the tracks that I really like, and tracks where I know I can bring something more out of the original.

Psyked:
You mentioned that you conducted thorough research before creating your third LP, Concept of Freedom. Do you feel that it’s important for a DJ to observe the music not only from behind the decks, but also on the dance floor to really understand it?

Mindwave:
Yes, I think as a musician you need to explore a little more to find out how can connect with your audience. It’s not just about making music for dance floor. It’s about leaving a mark in your music so that in the future, when people listen to your track, they will say wow! As we do today to Pink Floyd and Mozart etc.

Psyked:
You’ve headlined at many different events across the globe. If you could go back in time and relive one festival, which would it be?

Mindwave:
Wow, there are so many… I think O.Z.O.R.A Festival in 2011.
