Review: The Collective Paradise Beach

As the days progressed, my excitement reached its peak. I was more than ready to party it up on the beach with the masterful Morten Granau. I’ve got to hand it to The Collective for pinning Kogel Bay as the venue for their first-ever psychedelic gathering.

We arrived at sunset, greeted by a massive weedy peace sign on the beach while Tance Kai was setting up shop. What a magnificent location! It’s no wonder it’s been coined Paradise Beach. We decided to jam on the sand, admiring the backdrop of mountains as the sun disappeared beyond the horizon. We even spotted a few dolphins who wanted in on the festivities!

Alternate Frequency was on next and there was plenty of space to let loose and enjoy those banging basslines. Smiling faces surrounded us. Even the light was dancing, playing on the projections of the water.

When Kriss Kross performed their live debut set I was reminded why local is lekker. Their electric beats drew everyone up and onto the dancefloor (which was now a portal that could teleport you into an alternate universe). Slowly but surely everything blurred into a soft haze of purples and blues.

Plus Minus brought a killer set to life a little later. Their booming sounds were highlighted by the green and blue laser shows. Everyone was stomping hard, feeding off the goooood vibrations. I got that incredible feeling of unison on the dance-floor, the kind one rarely gets to enjoy at large festivals.

When Beartrap Productions’ main squeeze, Sway, got behind the decks things escalated to a new level. Guided by her majestic beats, we transported to a space without time. I was getting lost in the décor and the positive energy was pumping. People exchanged flowers with one another and there was a whole lot of PLUR in the air (best of all, no dick-heads on the dancefloor!).

What may have felt like a spiritual awakening was in actual fact Hysteria dropping his bad-ass tracks. The crowd roared, hungry for more and more. While the rest of the night became a hazy mix of stomping and deep, deep sleep.

As we climbed out of our tents the next morning we admired the cool temperature and the gentle drizzle that Mother Nature sent to refresh us. After gravitating towards the food stalls for some much-needed breakfast, I was ready for the day jam, beer-in-hand.

We headed to the dance-floor to catch a piece of Portal’s set. And I was deeply immersed in the Sunday session by the time Morten Granau took the stage. His upbeat tunes were in perfect harmony with the vigour of the troopers jumping around like crazy animals. Morten’s signature psy-prog beats exploded from the speakers. Nothing could stop his enthusiasm!

Gokon Rave followed suite, revving up for the day ahead. The outside world did not exist. There was only the the rolling waves, the happy vibes and the beautiful noise. The music journeyed from Feedback to Dave Mac with his crazy new-age tunes.

Blessed by the trance gods once more, it was time for Morten Granau to really work his magic. As he got into the DJ box to perform his live set for the first time ever in South Africa, the crowd was ecstatic. Needless to say, things were grooving nicely when he played his funkadelic mix of “Thriller.” Everyone tried out there 80’s dance moves and it was glorious; the cheers couldn’t be muted. Even after the sound had died down, the party continued. Mind-blowing is a definite understatement.

A huge thank you to The Collective crew for drawing together people from all walks of life to witness the holy union of music, love and nature. Paradise Beach won’t soon be forgotten. We can’t wait for the next one!
